Philosophy/Mandate
It is our strong belief and commitment to promote healthy mental health for day-to-day functioning and lifetime living while growing old. For us this is attainable with proper and well-focused research tailored on biopsychosocial factors implicit in older adult cognition and mental health. It is our mandate to ensure equity in access to mental health treatment through providing informed based information to clinicians and policy makers charged with older adult development in Nigeria.
Who We Are
We are team of researchers from various disciplines (psychology, medicine, social works, neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, nurses, radiographers and medical lab scientists) interested in understanding ageing cognition and mental health in Africa. We use biopsychosocial model approach to understand neural changes implicated in cognitive disorders in mid and old adult population in Nigeria. We are interested in understanding the neural behavioural consequences following neurodegenerative disorders as well as necessary interventions for prevention and management of neural changes and psychological disorders in old adults.
Our Research Mission
- Develop and execute randomized controlled trials (RCT), longitudinal and cross-sectional studies on survey, causes and treatment of cognitive and psychological disorders in mid and late adult population. This includes early onset of mild cognitive impairments, memory failure and other neurological and psychological problems affecting old age cognition.
- Design and execute RCT, longitudinal and cross-sectional survey studies to examine the epidemiology, causes and treatment of mental disorders in Nigeria.
- To empower community development through creation and running of outpatient psychology clinics to addresses stress management and adult psychopathologies and cognitive impairments.
